Leadership Foundations

Lead Big...We Do!

That’s why the CSLD encourages every student to seek out opportunities for leadership development at URI.  We hope that you’ll seriously consider enrolling in a class within the minor in Leadership Studies, however we know that the CSLD and the entire URI have countless opportunities for you to sample on your way to building your own unique foundation of leadership.  Take a look below at all that the CSLD and URI have to offer!

First-Year Foundations:

  • Apply for the Leadership Institute to get connect early at URI.
  • Participate in a leadership focused URI 101 or Living Learning Community(LLC).
  • Enroll in HDF 190: FLITE (First-Year Leaders Inspired to Excellence) in the spring semester.
  • Meet with a member of the CSLD staff for 1:1 advising regarding leadership opportunities foryou at URI.
  • Attend a First-Year CSLD leadership development workshop to improve your leadership skills.
  • Apply for Phi Eta Sigma Honor Society

Junior Foundations:

  • Enroll in HDF 290: Modern Leadership Issues or an approved elective course to begin the leadership minor.
  • Meet with a member of the CSLD staff for 1:1 advising regarding leadership opportunities for you at URI.
  • Attend the Leadership Professional Development Day event & Etiquette Dinner in fall.
  • Complete an internship within your academic department, through the Office of Internships & Experiential Education , or enroll in HDF 417: Leadership Minor Internship
  • Participate in a junior CSLD leadership development workshop to improve your leadership skills.
  • Prepare a professional resume appropriate to your field, practice for professional interviews, and begin your graduate school search with Career Services.
  • Apply for academic fellowships if eligible
  • Apply for a leadership position such as Tour Guide, Orientation Leader, North Woods Challenge Course Facilitator, SOLC Leadership Consultant, a student organization executive member or Institute Leader
  • Apply to serve as a mentor and/or to be mentored through programs like Leadership RI, RIJC, the SMILE program, Jumpstart, CSV Service Mentors or URI 101 Mentors, Greek 101, GAP Mentor, the MTI Program, and HDF 415: FLITE Peer Mentor among other opportunities

Senior Foundations:

  • Meet with a member of the CSLD staff for 1:1 advising regarding strategies for marketing your leadership experiences in your resume and interviews.
  • Complete a capstone course for the leadership minor such as HDF 412 or alternative capstone courses
  • Enroll in HDF 492: Leadership Minor Portfolio in the spring of your senior year
  • Attend the Senior Expedition
  • Meet with your academic Dean to complete a graduation audit (and any minor audits) prior to the start of your last semester at URI.

Foundation Opportunities for all URI Students:

  • Learn more about yourself and your strengths by completing the StrengthsQuest Inventory in a leadership class.
  • Participate in and inclusive leadership experience such as Diversity Week, MLK events, Black History Month, Women’s History Month, the GLBT Symposium, or the Women of Color Conference among other opportunities.
  • Participate in a service learning class or service learning project.
  • Participate in an academically related leadership event such as the Honor’s Colloqium, non-violence training courses, academic lectures, and/or departmentally sponsored programs.
  • Join a student organization to grow your collegiate leadership experience
  • Apply for a leadership position such as Tour Guide, Orientation Leader, Service Mentor, or Institute Leader
  • Apply to serve as a mentor and/or for a leadership position on campus or in the URI community (Leadership RI, Jumpstart, Service Mentors, Greek 101, North Woods Challenge Course Facilitator, Orientation Leader, SOLC Leadership Consultant, Institute Leader, HDF 190: FLITE Peer Leader, etc.)
