The Minor in Leadership Studies

  • Background
  • The CSLD utilizes a cross-disciplinary approach to leadership education at URI. Leadership is an ever changing discipline with theoretical roots in education, psychology, business, communication studies and in human development.  Therefore, our approach to teaching leadership within the leadership minor has to be unique.

    At URI, we are among only a handful of colleges and universities in the nation that offer a Minor in Leadership Studies.  Ours is worth taking a look at because we offer:

    Access: Any student, in any major, can enroll in an introductory course.

    Approach: All courses utilize a variety of teaching methods but ultimately include some form of experiential learning, practical application, and reflective learning.

    Achievement:  Employers, now more than ever, are seeking candidates with exceptional skills in the areas of interpersonal and group management, problem solving, critical thinking and effective communication.  We can help with all of the above.

    Advising:  Our staff, advisory board members, and alumni are available to work with students and groups throughout the year.  Let us get to know you, and your strengths, in order to get you on the right path at URI.

    Ultimately, we seek to bridge these areas – through research and education, training, developmental opportunities, and experiential learning opportunities – in order to offer each student an individualized approach to leadership development.


  • Enrollment and Advising
  • Undergraduate students at URI may declare a minor in Leadership Studies once they have successfully completed an introductory course (see core requirements below). Students are encouraged to their major academic advisor of their declared minor to assist in the advising process. Enrollment occurs after an advising appointment with a CSLD staff member, who will serve as a minor advisor, and facilitate students progress through the minor and help ensure that minor requirements are fulfilled.


  • Requirements
  • Requirements may be satisfied by completing 18 or more credits related to leadership. Twelve of the 18 required credits must be at the 200 level of instruction or above. A course grade of "C" or better must be earned in each graded course. At least 12 of the credits must be earned at URI. Please see the full description below.


  • Graduating Seniors
  • All seniors graduating with the Leadership Studies minor are required to meet with the current Assistant Director prior to their last semester at URI in order to complete the minor audit form. An audit form must be filed in your academic dean's office and are available in the CSLD office.

    HDF 190 - First Year Leaders Inspired to Excellence (FLITE)
    This course is offered only to first year students and focuses on the foundations of leadership theory and application. Students begin to develop a personal philosophy of leadership that includes understanding self and others as well as roles and responsibilities inherent in community membership.
  • Only offered in spring semester
  • Get Connected to First Year Leaders
  • Learn about your strengths and how you can use them to lead
  • Topics include Social Change Model, Relational Leadership, and Servant Leadership
  • OR

    HDF 290 - Modern Leadership Issues
    This introductory leadership course for sophomores and juniors examines leadership theory, critical thinking and leadership in small business, politics, or non-profit organizations as well as U.S. education, modern families, and diversity in the workplace.
  • Offered in both fall and spring semesters
  • Learn about your strengths and how you can use them to lead
  • Gain an understanding of theory and how it can be put into practice
  • Learn through interactive class dicussions and real life case studies

  • Internship
    3 credits

    HDF 417 - Leadership Internship
    Experience leadership first hand in a professional setting and understand and experience the integration of the concepts and models of supervision and project management.
  • Requires 40 hours / credit with a minimum of 80 hours and a maximum of 120 hours of documented internship experience for graded credit

    OR

    Internship class in academic major (the only time the major and minor can overlap)

    HDF 412 - Historical, Multi-Ethnic and Alternative Leadership
    Examines issues of cultural anthropology, critical thinking, theories of inclusion, and crisis leadership.
  • Offered only in the fall
  • Open to juniors and seniors with preference given to seniors
  • Refocus on personal strengths: Get prepared to market your leadership skills on resumes, applications and interviews
  • OR

    COM 402 - Leadership and Motivation
    Examines theory and research in the areas of leadership and motivation in organizational settings. Emphasis on application of theory in developing essential leadership skills within individuals and in creating effective motivational programs within organizations.

    BUS 441 - Leadership Skills Development
    Examines application of organizational behavior concepts to develop leadership competencies and effective employee management programs.

    HPR 411/412 - Honors Senior Seminar
  • Must be in Honors, or have a GPA of 3.3 to enroll
  • Portfolio course

    HDF 492 - Leadership Minor Portfolio
  • Taken last spring semester of enrollment unless last semester is student teaching, a full-time internship away, or study abroad

    HDF 291 - Rose Butler Browne Peer Mentoring Program
    This elective is designed for students that are interested in an exploratory and introspective look at the issues affecting women of color. Students will explore cultural identity and leadership theories through readings and other media as well as learn about a variety of issues, including historical perspectives, which continue to affect women of color today.
  • Examine and apply principles of mentoring
  • Students need not identify as a woman of color to enroll in this course, this course is open to all students at URI

  • HDF 413 - Student Organization Leadership Consultants
    Examines experiential education, organizational development, facilitation techniques, and ethical issues of peer leadership. The mission of SOLC is to promote and use peer leadership by helping groups, organizations, and teams effective and efficiently achieve their desired goals. Consultants receive advanced training in leadership and group development through this elective. Elective for leadership minors.
  • Gain practical & marketable hands-on experience in facilitation, event planning, organizational development, and working with diverse groups
  • Serve as a peer consultant for URI's student organizations
  • Discover SOLC and how it can impact you college career


  • HDF 414 - Leadership for Social Change
    Explores issues related to social change, power and privilege, coalition building, non-violence, civic engagement & activist movements.  Elective for leadership minors.
  • Experience activism by learning from a variety of sources including research, community leaders, and guest speakers.
  • Identify your “causes,” while finding ways to act on those causes in your future life
  • Course focuses on current issues around Activisim and Social Change


  • HDF 415 - FLITE Peer Leadership
    Explores mentoring strategies, leadership and identity development models, leadership style, and community involvement.  Elective for leadership minors.
  • Identify and utilize your strengths in a variety of settings
  • Plan and participate in a series of experiential workshops for first year students
  • Gain an in depth knowledge of mentoring inside and outside of the classroom


  • HDF 416 - Personal and Organizational Leadership
    Topics include leadership theory and style, experiential learning, peer mentoring, critical thinking, quality improvement, and organizational develoment.
  • Apply personal and organizational leadership skills to create positive change and community growth at URI
